Can big fish be caught in Cook County?

With the fishing opener right around the corner, fishermen start to dream of the “big one that didn’t get away.” The following is proof that a few fishermen’s dreams have come true.

Anglers plying Cook County lakes and streams have set some of Minnesota’s best fishing records. Maybe this will be your year to land a fish in the record books. But remember, it all starts with a dream, and of course getting out to actually fish.

On September 2, 2000 a Grand Portage man caught a 6 pound 5.6 ounce brook trout from Pigeon River. Way back in May 30, 1955, a 43 pound 8 ounce lake trout was caught in Lake Superior and on May 27, 1980, a 16 pound 6 ounce rainbow trout was pulled from Devil Track River.

The largest menominee (whitefish) caught? It was 2 pounds 7.5 ounces and reeled in from Lake Superior on April 27, 1987. On September 9, 1989 a 4 pound 8 ounce pink salmon was taken from Cascade River and two weeks later a 33 pound 4 ounce chinook (king) salmon was pulled from the Poplar River.

And who can forget the state walleye record? This 17 pound 8 ounce lunker came from Seagull River on May 13, 1979.

So go ahead and dream. There are certainly state record fish swimming in our lakes and streams right now. But remember, you can’t catch them from your sofa. You have to get out and fish, and fish, and fish….
