Camper crash at Cascade River blocks traffic on Highway 61




Cook County received an emergency call reporting a two-car collision on Highway 61 near Cascade River in Lutsen at 9:41 a.m. Friday, June 5. The original caller stated a semi was involved. Fortunately, that was not the case. There were no serious injuries in the crash; however, traffic was backed up on Highway 61 for several hours.

The accident involved a Dodge Ram pickup with a camper towing a 16-foot boat and trailer. Jonah Lang, 17, of Edgar, Wisconsin was traveling eastbound when he hit a guardrail at mile marker 99. The pickup ended up on its side on the roadway.

The Lutsen Fire Department, Lutsen First Responders, and Cook County Ambulance were paged at 9:44 a.m. and the ambulance on scene at 9:58 a.m. The Lutsen Fire Department was on scene at 10 a.m.

The driver and his three passengers were shaken, but no one was transported to the hospital.

The Maple Hill STOP team was paged to assist with traffic control as wreckage of the accident was cleared from the highway. The STOP team was on scene by 10:29 a.m. and helped get traffic through when one traffic lane was opened at 11 a.m. The highway was completely reopened by 12:12 p.m.

The pickup suffered moderate damage. It was towed by Cook County Towing.

It is believed that speed was a factor in the crash.
