“Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings.” Remember that famous line from Jimmy Stewart’s classic, “It’s a Wonderful Life”?

Well, there won’t be any bell ringing if you take part in a world record attempt at making snow angels on January 1, at noon, but there might be some happy singing, and cheering if everyone gets outside on January 1 at noon and makes a snow angel.

Fresh snow on the ground provides the perfect canvas to make snow angels, and we now have plenty of the fluffy white stuff on the ground.

The goal is simple; if enough Minnesotans gather six feet apart from each other and make snow angels on January 1 at noon we could be part of a world record effort.

Nova Scotia residents hold the current world record. A glorious glom of them, some 22,022, lay prone on the ground and flapped their arms and legs in virtual unison in 2011. They broke the record of 8,962 snow angels set by 8,962 silly North Dakota residents in 2007. And actually, North Dakota originally set the mark of 1,791 snow angels in 2002 but it was broken by Michigan Tech University, who made 3,784 snow angels on a football field.

On New Year’s Day at noon, go out and make a snow angel. Send a buck or two to your local food shelf and indicate that you took part in the crusade to set a new world record. If you don’t have a buck or two, volunteer to help a neighbor or non-profit. Even sending someone a joke or positive message that brightens his or her day works.

Remember, making snow angels is just a start to your new year. And you have to figure, if Michigan could hold a world record, and North Dakota and Nova Scotia, isn’t it time for some far better looking angels from Minnesota to break the mark, take it, and make it ours?

Next week, look for a website here where you can upload your snow angel picture(s).
