Calling all hands for Summer Theater Festival

The Grand Marais Playhouse is gearing up for the 2014 Summer Theater Festival. It begins on April 21 and 22 with two meetings for any interested performers (actors, singers, musicians). The festival includes a comedy and a musical that play in repertory on weekends from July 17 – August 10.

The meeting on Monday, April 21 at 7 p.m. at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts will be for those interested in performing in a musical. Ability to read music is advantageous. Piano players for rehearsal and performance are essential. A small music ensemble would be fantastic! All performers must be ready to commit to necessary rehearsal schedule, make time to spend with music and dialogue memorization outside of rehearsal and must be available for every performance. Musical performance dates will be July 17, 19, 25, 27, 31, August 2, 8, 10.

On Tuesday, April 22 at 7 p.m. at the Arrowhead Center for the Arts the meeting will be for those interested in performing in a comedy. Men and women, high school to adult are encouraged to attend. No experience necessary. All performers must be ready to commit to necessary rehearsal schedule, make time to spend with memorization outside of rehearsal and must be available for every performance. Comedy performance dates are July 18, 20, 24, 26, August 1, 3, 7, 9.

There are many opportunities to become involved with the Grand Marais Playhouse, both on stage and behind the scenes. And it is a lot of fun. Just ask the folks preparing for the next production, a revival of the highly popular Church Basement Ladies. (L-R) Mark Abrahamson, Yvonne Mills, Rose Arrowsmith DeCoux, Linda Waterhouse, Diane Stoddard.

Rehearsals will begin in May but will be moderately flexible to accommodate the majority of the casts’ needs. All productions are ensemble work so attendance by all performers is the most advantageous.

Once the shows have been selected the work surrounding the festival will pick up in earnest. Stage managers for each production will be needed. Set, light, sound, and costume designs must be finalized so that construction can begin. Any community member interested in any area of production should contact the Playhouse office to be included on an email /call list for work schedules.

Community actors whose schedules only accommodate performances around July 4th or Labor Day should contact the Playhouse to discuss options for productions during those times. The festival has priority but if the theater muses shine on us, and we have a plethora of actors, other productions will be added!

Onto current news: Church Basement Ladies is in rehearsal for a dinner theater May 23 and 24. Details are still being worked out so we’ll have more on that later! Seating will be limited so make sure your calendar is open. Check the Playhouse website, www.grandmaraisplayhouse.com for the most up-todate information.
