The Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery is releasing a call to artists for multiple opportunities from 2023-2025. Artists may apply for as many of the opportunities for which they qualify. Artists must be able to deliver their art to the gallery located at 115 Wisconsin St, Grand Marais MN 55604. The Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery is a non-profit art gallery operating as part of the greater Cook County Historical Society. We curate our exhibitions and feature artists with the goal of furthering our mission to collect, preserve and share our material, cultural and artistic heritage. To this end, we will prioritize applications submitted by working regional artists, with secondary consideration given to non-regional artists after this has been done. Following is a summary of opportunities:
2024-25 GALLERY EXHIBITION ARTISTS
Exhibitions feature the work of an individual artist or group for 3 weeks, including an opening night reception. Artists of all experiences, mediums and inspirations are welcome to apply. Must be able to fill the gallery space. At least 90 percent of exhibition pieces must be available for purchase. Gallery commission is 35 percent. Applications for 2024 close August 2023. Applications for 2025 close August 2024.
2022 LOCAL ARTIST OF THE MONTH
Artists of the Month are featured in the Johnson Heritage Post Gift Shop for one month alongside an artist’s statement. Artists of all experiences, mediums and inspirations are welcome to apply. 100 percent of exhibition pieces must be available for purchase. Gallery commission is 35 percent. Must have at least 8 pieces to display and sell. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
2023 DEVELOPING ARTIST EXHIBITION
A mentoring event designed to give 2-3 developing artists the opportunity to experience participating in an exhibition. Exhibition runs January 6-20, 2023. Developing artists are considered artists with a lack of professional experience, including participating in exhibitions or the general displaying and selling their art. At least 90 percent of exhibition pieces must be available for purchase. Gallery commission is 35 percent, 15 percent of which will be donated to the Grand Marais Art Colony scholarship fund to support inclusive access to art education.
2023 or 2024 DARK SKIES FESTIVAL EXHIBITION
1-3 artists will be featured as part of the annual Dark Skies Festival. Must exhibit art with a focus on celebrating nighttime, night skies, etc. Examples may include nocturne paintings or night photography. 2023 exhibition will run November 17-December 10. 2024 Exhibition will run December 6-December 29.

Johnson Heritage Post is a non-profit art gallery run by the Cook County Historical Society.
