If you want to take a trip into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) anytime from May 1 to September 30, you should consider getting your permit as soon as possible. Permits went on sale on January 25, 2023.
Last year the Forest Service cut back its permits to entry points in the BWCAW by about one third and it is sticking with that quota again for 2023.
For people planning to apply this year the Forest Service is asking you to put three options for dates and entry points on your permit application.
The Forest Service cut its permit quota to the BWCAW following a surge of damage to campsites caused by a steep increase in visitors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Just when the Forest Service will bring back the normal number of permits isn’t yet known.
All non-motorized day use visitors and overnight visitors planning to enter the BWCAW are required to get self-issued permits between October and April.
