Chefs Lachelle Cunningham of Breaking Bread Café and Amanda Cowette of Wise Acre Eatery ventured into the boundary waters for the first time last month as they joined Chef Lukas Leaf of Al Vento for an expedition to fish for their meals.

The trip, organized by Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters in support of the Campaign to Save the Boundary Waters, was led by Dave Seaton of Hungry Jack Outfitters.

The goal of the trip was to show the chefs the beauty of the hunting and fishing destination that is the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and to challenge them to catch the food they would cook and eat.

Guided by experienced campers, they paddled and portaged their way to Caribou Lake where they fished for northern pike and each created a meal in the wilderness. The trip was documented by filmmaker Mark Norquist as a three-part film series titled Fish out of water that will premiere Nov. 16 at Steel Toe Brewing in St. Louis Park. The event is free and open to the public.

After the premiere, the film will be available for viewing on the Sportsmen for the Boundary Waters website at www.sportsmenfortheboundarywaters.org/.
