Daniel Ahrendt took the documentary that he and his History Day project partner, Alex Murray, had created to the State History Day competition in April. Murray was fulfilling another commitment with his hockey team, so Ahrendt presented the duo’s documentary: BWCA: The Environmental Debate to judges at the state event. The team finished just outside of the medals—the top five presentations receive medals. Ahrendt and Murray finished in a very impressive sixth place.
The documentary easily met the topic for the 2011 Minnesota History Day competition Debate and Diplomacy: Successes, failures, and consequences.
Ahrendt and Murray conducted research and interviews with Cook County residents who were impacted by the BWCA Act, such as Gunflint Lodge owner Bruce Kerfoot. The young men have posted their documentary to YouTube—see it on-line at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0XRF5WlY8M.
All of the Cook County Middle School students in Dorie Carlson and T.J. Super’s social studies classes enjoyed the challenge of finding moments in history that demonstrate the consequences of successful—or failed—diplomacy.
