The Grand Portage Elders remain busy and active this spring. In April we participated in a Medicine Talk hosted by Grand Marais Pharmacist Robert Sample. Pharmacist Sample provided a great chili meal with all the fixings. He spent time with the Elders answering questions and concerns about their medication and provided valuable information about arthritis research and medication. All Elders were provided a brown paper sack to bring in their medications. Grand Portage Health Clinic nurses were on hand to assist with the event. Prizes were given for both the oldest medication and the most. Respective winners were Betty Hoffman and Doris Blank.
The Elders had the opportunity to attend a Medicare and Scam presentation by Marjori Bottila from the Area Agency on Aging, Thursday, May 3. A light supper was provided.
We will be celebrating our Elders this year at the 14th Annual Honor Our Elders PowWow on Saturday, May 12. We enjoy this event and appreciate this time spent with family and friends. Miigwech to the Grand Portage Tribal Council and community for hosting this event.
May is Older American Month and the Elder Nutrition Program will be celebrating with special presentations about nutrition, exercise, health and volunteering. The ENP wishes all mothers a very happy Mother’s Day!
Once again “Rez Rides” will be resuming. These are short trips provided for interested Elders to get out and see the reservation and surrounding area. We drive the back roads and village noticing changes, sharing stories and just checking out what is going on. We always take the opportunity to enjoy pie somewhere during these outings.
The greenhouse is ready for planting. Dennis Westerlind, the ENP maintenance man, has tilled it. We started some seeds in the ENP and they will be planted in the greenhouse the first week of May. The outside raised beds will also be tilled and ready for planting around May 10. Our rhubarb is beginning to sprout and this year we will try planting some fresh herbs for use in the ENP. Mike and Quincy are volunteering to help with the gardening. All produce grown in the ENP gardens and greenhouse are used in our congregate and home delivery meal programs. Any Elder is welcome to use the raised beds for gardening. Any surplus veggies are shared with Elders for their home use. These vegetables help with our food costs and are healthy, delicious additions to our meals.
