Busy “Older Americans Month” at Care Center

Joyce Kehoe and Irma Larsen helped promote a Spring Fling Sale at the Care Center on May 4. It took many weeks for residents to prepare knitted hats, scarves, potted plants, soup in a jar, baked goods, and grab bags for the sale. There were some white elephant items, too. The Resident Council members sponsored the sale and plan to do it again.

May is “Older Americans Month” and the North Shore Care Center will celebrate with special activities throughout the month – especially during “Homes for the Aging Week,” May 8-14, sponsored by Aging Services of Minnesota.

This year the long-term care profession salutes older adults, families, employees, and volunteers with the theme “Celebrate Age.” It honors and celebrates age – not as a measure of how old we are, but rather as a way to revere the positive contributions we make to our community and to each other every day – whether we’re 25 or 95.

Here in Grand Marais, the month’s events started out with a Spring Fling Sale on May 4, organized by the Resident Council. The ladies of the Care Center worked for weeks knitting, potting plants, baking, and filling grab bags for the big sale. On Cinco de Mayo, the residents enjoyed an outing to Hughie’s Taco House, and later this month will go out for lunch at the Senior Center.

Grand Marais Mayor Larry Carlson will officially kick off Homes for the Aging Week with a proclamation to the community on WTIP radio. The community is welcome to join in the festivities at the Care Center all week, beginning on May 8 with a Mother’s Day Social hosted by Mayor Carlson at 3 p.m.

The 5th annual Senior Prom will be held on May 10 at 6:30 p.m. The semi-formal dance will feature pianist Doug Sanders, the jazz sounds of Briand Morrison, and Max Bickel. There will be a diverse age group in attendance this year to “Celebrate Age” including elders, families, staff, volunteers, and Cook County High School students.

The monthly birthday party will be May 11 at 3 p.m. to honor Marion McKeever’s 91st year. There will be cake, ice cream, and piano music provided by Susy Lindskog.

On May 12, the residents will be treated to a Sven & Ole’s pizza lunch by the Cook County Middle School Student Council. Gold Dollar Bingo will also be on May 12 with caller Walt Mianowski at 2:30 p.m.

More entertainment this month includes music nights with Al Fuller, Myron Bursheim, and Paul Pederson. The band Portage will perform their classic country music for a dance on May 28 at 6:30 p.m.

The annual Volunteer Appreciation Brunch is on May 25 at 10 a.m. At the brunch, the residents and staff want to “Celebrate Age” and thank over 70 volunteers of all ages for sharing their time and talents at the Care Center throughout the year. Volunteers truly enrich the lives of residents and keep them connected to the community.
