The residents at the Care Center have been enjoying plenty of activities on the patio with the beautiful weather that we have been having this summer. There continues to be a lot of activity and excitement indoors as well, in anticipation of “Moving Day.”
A date hasn’t been set yet as we await the final cleaning and inspections of new resident rooms in the first stage of construction here at the Care Center. Once that has been completed, a day will be set aside to move many of the residents into their new home. It should be a fun-filled day with residents, staff, volunteers, and families working together to accomplish the task. Of course, refreshments will be provided to keep everyone going!
August is a busy month, starting with the Fisherman’s Picnic. There will be lots of friends and families visiting over the Fisherman’s Picnic weekend along with fun activities here at the Care Center. An outing is planned to the “Old Timer’s Gathering” on Friday, August 5 in the afternoon at the Senior Center. Later that day, the residents will be treated to fishburgers provided by the Grand Marais Lions Club. On Saturday afternoon, we’ll be sharing stories from past Fisherman’s Picnics and enjoying some fish snacks on the patio. Several folks will also participate in the parade on Sunday, so watch for us on the Arrowhead bus!
Other outings this month will be to the Tourist Park for a picnic lunch at the pavilion on August 18 and a visit to the Senior Center for lunch on August 25.
The monthly birthday party will be August 10 at 3:00 p.m. to honor several residents here at the Care Center. Diane Deschampe, Darold Larson, Marie Jacobson, and Ione Jones all share birthdays in the month of August. Eleanor Waha will once again make her delicious cake and Doug Sanders will play piano tunes for the occasion.
Music this month will be performed by Myron Bursheim on Sunday afternoons, Al Fuller on Monday evenings, and Susan Scherer on Wednesday evenings. The band Portage will be back with their classic country music for a dance on Saturday, August 27 at 6:30 p.m. Community members are always welcome!
On Monday, August 15, you’ll find the residents busy making leis for our Hawaiian Fest to be held the week of Aug. 22-26. Many fun activities are planned for the week to celebrate the anniversary of Hawaii becoming the 50th state. Some of the events include Hilja’s Hawaiian Happy Hour with drinks and treats from the Islands, watching Blue Hawaii, making fruit kabobs, and a Hawaiian Style Bingo!
August 31 is “National Dog Day” and the residents will be hosting a Dog Contest that afternoon. Awards will be given in several different categories, with the residents doing the judging. Dog and people treats will follow. A howling good time should be had by all!
