I had the privilege of helping Great Expectations School solicit funds for a pancake breakfast fundraiser earlier this summer. Armed with a clipboard and a fellow teacher to back me up when the words lodged in my throat, we walked into businesses and asked for money. We approached the task not only with fear of rejection, but with the uncomfortable knowledge that the Grand Marais business owners receive daily requests to donate their profits to the numerous non-profits and other good causes in Cook County. In this case we were thinking it actually might “hurt to ask” yet we forged ahead. We were met with gracious owners and managers willing to stop, listen and give. We were treated with kindness and generosity by businesses large and small. We are so lucky to have a business community that shoulders and accepts this kind of responsibility.
