Joe Deschampe’s single pushed in the Vikings’ lone run against the Carlton Bulldogs in an away game played Thursday, April 13.

The Vikings fell 11-1 in five innings. Carlton scored 2 in the second, 4 in the third, 4 in the fourth and one run in the fifth. The Vikings’ lone run came in the fourth inning.

Jackson Mickle took the win from the mound for Carlton. Tyler Ojibwe, Evan Gray and Sam Macor had the hot bats for the Bulldogs.

“We struggled again offensively,” said head coach Arleigh Jorgenson. “It will take some time, but we are improving.

“Defensively, we walked too many hitters and made some very costly mistakes on plays that we should have made when there were too many runners on base. We will make these plays going forward.”

With the majority of the Viking starters in 10th grade (or younger) Coach Jorgenson expects some growing pains.

“Our youth and inexperience are showing itself in terms of nerves and confidence. As the game became one-sided, our confidence waned. We did get two more of our pitchers onto the mound. We have pitching depth, but we are short on experience. It takes some time to find the confidence on the mound that allows a pitcher to trust his body and his training just to let the ball go. We are on a journey. We are excited and determined to enjoy it and build on each outing.”

The Vikings head to Northeast Range on Friday, April 21. “We are eager. Things get serious next week when we travel to Esko on Tuesday, Moose Lake on Thursday, and to Silver Bay on Saturday for a doubleheader against Cherry and Silver Bay. We are going to be challenged, but I believe we are up for it.”
