Build it and they will come

Fantastic amenities at the YMCA. However, heating bills adding up? In the 1970s I designed the energy center (my home) for comfortable efficient living, a gymnasium (a must for healthy living), great insulation and winter passive solar.

On the main floor (hint: top floor of two levels) I can close two bedroom doors and have a toasty warm kitchen, dining, living room and one bathroom (550 square feet). I use the refrigerator for the heat…well, a little more.

Anyway, I recently had a guided tour of the new Y. When I walked in the front door…oh, a great pool and gymnasium. Not too big?

My great tour guide then showed me the entire facility. Jaw-dropping amenities (great!) and large areas for each type. Later I began thinking about the square footage and volume of area to heat. When calculating the volume my calculator had to switch to the exponential mode to handle the large numbers. The saga continues.

George, you are correct and we accept your apology. Had we been responsible for the construction of, the resulting environmental cost, and environmental impact of just the heating of this large facility we too would feel extraordinary guilt.

Build it and they will come! Nope! You built it…now let’s see you figure out how to pay for the operating costs of one more Cook County government-owned and/or funded facility.

Global warming? Anyone?
