The spring green-up is happening even though a person could still find patches of snow lingering in the shade. Seasonal allergy sufferers, like myself, can tell you that the trees are pollinating. Aspen trees are budding and soon will be full of leaves, as our landscape slowly turns green with the recent showers.
Memorial weekend typically signifies the beginning of the tourist season in Cook County as hundreds of campers towing boats, and canoe-covered vehicles set a course for the great North Woods of Minnesota. Hikers, climbers, anglers, and paddlers will all be enjoying the woods this weekend despite the forecasted rainstorms.
Campers will have to fight the elements, but there should not be too many bugs to contend with since they have not had the right conditions to begin hatching. As sure as paying your taxes, the bugs will soon hatch in swarms and the fish will begin feeding.
Water temperatures are still in the upper 40s and lower 50s on most lakes and the walleyes are still spawning in the rivers and bays. Small males can be caught near a few of the spawning areas, but they are still in the milking stage and should really be left alone to finish their role in the process.
The week before Memorial Day is very hectic for us at Skyport Lodge with many preparations to complete before the holiday weekend. The docks need to be pushed into the lake and the rental boats need to be prepared and launched before I can even consider wetting a line. Good thing we have plenty of help this year.
