Buck’s Big Buck contest underway

Posted on the big white board at Buck’s Hardware are the early leaders in Buck’s Big Buck contest.

After a warmer than usual weekend of hunting with temperatures reaching the low 60’s, Amanda Husky led the contest in both categories of field dressed weight and antler spread. Amanda’s buck weighed in at 215 pounds and had an antler spread of 19 inches.

However, on Tuesday, November 10, Kerry Leeds, Grand Marais, entered a buck that weighed 218 pounds and had an antler spread of 20 ½ inches.

During the opening week Abraham Avery brought in a buck that tipped the scales at 204 pounds and had an antler spread of 18-7/8 inches.

Sitting in fourth is Britney Trovall with her 200-pound entry, and in fifth is Alex Johnson with a 178-pound submission. Travis Smith was in sixth place at the time the entries were looked at with his 151-pound buck.

The winner of the heaviest (largest dressed weight) buck will receive a new rifle. Half of the entry money will go to the hunter who brought in the deer with the largest antler spread and the other half of the money will go to the winner of the drawing, which is pulled from the pool of applicants who paid $10 each to enter. This year there were 393 entries.

The contest wraps up on Sunday, November 22, the last day of the Minnesota firearm deer-hunting season.
