If you hadn’t realized it because of the all the blaze-orange-clad people in town and in the woods, deer hunting season is in full swing. Part of the excitement of the season is watching the board at Buck’s Hardware to see who is taking the lead in Buck’s Big Buck Contest.

At press time Jeff Hughey of Twin Lake, Michigan was in the lead for largest dressed weight with a hefty buck weighing in at 232 pounds. If Hughey can keep his lead he will win a new deer rifle.

Other hunters who entered but got beat out by Hughey’s entry were John Shaw of Waconia, MN with a 229-pound buck and Shane Smith of Grand Marais with a 227-pound buck.

All of the hunters who entered are still in the running for the cash drawing. One lucky hunter will have his or her name drawn to win the other half of the cash.

The contest runs in our area, zone 100, until the end of deer rifle season on Sunday, November 18. Although the contest is over then, deer hunting continues with archery season still open until December 31. Muzzleloader season opens November 24 and runs until December 9.

Safe hunting, everyone!
