TheViking Alpine girls’ team continues to show its depth and strength as a regional competitor by taking first place at the Hibbing Invitational at Giants Ridge on January 7, 2010. This first place finish followed their first place finish on December 17, also at Giants Ridge.
This race showcased team depth. Molly Rider again led with a strong individual performance finishing third place overall. Katie Smedstad and Ali Boettcher (both from Silver Bay) finished fifth and 16th place respectively. Rose Ingebrigtsen completed the team scoring (top four finishers from each team are used for team results) finishing 24th in a field that showcased 70 racers.
Megan Lehto (eighth grade) finished 32nd. Megan’s performance in the top half of the field still would have produced an overall team victory should Rose’s score not be used. That shows depth.
Signe Larson had the second fastest run of the day in the first race and likely positioned for a first or second place overall finished but was tripped up just four gates from the finish and still managed a 31st place finish. Kristina Andelova and Amber Todd rounded out the girls’ team with top 50 results. Coach Elverhoy stated that having Rose Ingebrigtsen complete two solid runs was critical for the team winning the overall team title for the day.
And bring on another Ingebrigtsen. Karl Ingebrigtsen (brother to Rose) led the Alpine boys with a 12th place finish overall – Karl’s second consecutive 12th place finish. What’s notable about Karl’s result is he was just 3/100th of a second from a top ten performance.
Also notable was Luke Fenwick. Luke had the eighth fastest time of the second run of the day but slipped up during the morning race. Colin Berglund had yet another top 20 performance and finished 18th overall in a field that featured 10 regional teams and 84 racers. Dexter Yoki (Silver Bay), Clay Gruber-Shultz, Joe Borud and Kyle Martinson rounded out the boys’ team, resulting in a sixth place team finish.
January heats up as big race month. Following the victory above, the Alpine Vikings travel to Spirit Mountain on January 14 and January 18 followed by the Cook County/Silver Bay Race Invitational at Lutsen Mountains on January 21.
