As the temperatures warmed and the ice disappeared more people have come to the Senior Center. We have greeted them with new activities. The special guest lunches are becoming very popular.
At a March lunch, Sheriff Mark Falk talked about home safety with 27 people. Steve DuChien, Grand Marais firefighter and EMT, joined the sheriff and talked with apartment residents about their special safety concerns. After lunch interested folks went outside with Steve to learn to use a fire extinguisher. Join the sheriff at a Senior Center lunch on the fourth Wednesday of each month.
The public is also invited to have fire extinguishers recharged for $22.50 each, at the Senior Center on Wednesday, April 14. Dan Heinzen of Action Fire will be available 12:30-1:30 p.m. He will advise attendees on fire extinguisher needs and have a variety of fire extinguishers for sale.
Seniors love the Nintendo Wii and big screen television that Ms. Livingston’s third graders earned for the Senior Center. Bowling has been very popular with participants and spectators. Mondays and Fridays after lunch are scheduled times for playing games on the Wii. Susan Shaffer will be offering Wii instruction after lunch on Friday, April 9.
Trivia is another new Senior Center activity after lunch on Tuesdays. You do not need to know a lot of trivia, but be ready to laugh. We are having a lot of fun learning interesting facts and winning prizes. In March we learned which leg of a chicken is most tender.
On Friday, March 26, we had the first run of the “Lunch Express.” A group of 12 went to lunch at Trail Center. Once each month a group will be taking the bus to lunch at a restaurant in Cook or Lake County. On Friday, April 16, the Lunch Express will be going to Our Place in Finland. The April trip will be $19 per person for transportation with lunch at your own expense. Call the Senior Center to sign up and watch for future Lunch Express destinations.
On Monday, April 26, we start a new monthly trip to Grand Portage, with stops at the Lodge and Casino, the Heritage Center, and the Elder Nutrition Program for lunch. The cost of transportation is $14 per person. Call the Senior Center to register for the trip.
Pick up a monthly Senior Center newsletter and learn more about activities and read about topics of interest to seniors. In April the newsletter features information about reverse mortgages.
