Brighter side of aging

Travel adventures with Senior Center

A group of seniors had a wonderful finale to Christmas last Monday. They attended the spectacular Naniboujou Lodge Christmas Caroling Dinner. They have some wonderful memories on which to reflect in 2010.

With ice on the ground it is difficult for all of us to get around without falling. It is more difficult for our older community members. Some of our seniors become shut-ins and need help with shopping and transportation. Please, offer to help by grocery shopping, picking up prescriptions, or chopping ice off steps and sidewalks. If you do not know someone who needs help, call the Senior Center at 387-2660 to be matched with a person in need.

This winter do not forget the transportation options offered by Arrowhead Transit. Bus service is available to everyone. Door-to-door bus service is available within five miles of Grand Marais, Monday through Friday 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for $1.00 per ride. Call 370-1515 to arrange for a ride. Monday – Friday Arrowhead Transit makes two round trips daily from Grand Marais to Grand Portage. An Arrowhead bus goes to Duluth on the second Tuesday and the fourth Thursday each month, too.

TheSenior Center provides rides to out-of-the-county medical appointments, when people are unable to find rides for themselves. Call the Senior Center to arrange for a ride from a volunteer driver.

At the Senior Center we will be showing travel videos at noon on Mondays. Cribbage and bingo will be on Thursdays and Scrabble on Tuesdays. There is always a jigsaw puzzle going and lunch at 11:30 a.m. Monday – Friday. Librarian Linda Chappell will be stopping by in January to share some books and information about books on tape. We will be making French onion soup on Monday, January 18.

We will be taking a trip to the Waves of Superior Spa in Tofte on Monday, January 11. We will enjoy a morning at the Grand Marais Pool on Tuesday, January 26. On Tuesday, February 2, we will go on a sleigh ride at Okontoe and have lunch at Trail Center. Watch for dog sled rides to be scheduled. Please call the Senior Center at 387-2660 for more information on the trips. Senior Center trips are planned for adults aged 50 plus, but all ages are welcome.

It is time to sign up to go on a longer bus trip. There will be a trip to Iowa Sunday, May 2 to Saturday, May 8, 2010. We will be visiting the Amana Colonies and attending the Pella Tulip Festival. The price for transportation, six nights double-occupancy lodging, six continental breakfasts, and tickets is $589 per person.

There will be a trip north of Lake Superior to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario including a trip on the Agawa Canyon Tour Train Monday, August 30 to Friday, September 3, 2010. The price for transportation, four nights double occupancy lodging, two continental breakfasts, and train ticket will be about $500 per person, depending on the U.S./Canadian exchange rate. Call the Senior Center for more information on trips or to make a reservation.
