The snow this week has helped everyone to get into the holiday spirit. A Senior Center group really got into the spirit last Wednesday, with a trip to Duluth to enjoy the Bentleyville Light Tour at Bayfront Park.
The Senior Center Christmas Party will be on Wednesday, December 23. We will start with a festive Chicken Kiev dinner at 11:30 a.m. After dinner we will have a gift exchange and play bingo. Call (218) 387-2660 for your lunch reservation or more details.
The West End seniors will be gathering for lunch at Birch Grove Community Center at 11:30 a.m. on Thursdays, December 10 and 17. In January 2010, the Birch Grove Senior Lunch will be on Wednesdays at 11:30 a.m. For special meals cooked by Barb Merritt, call (218) 663-7977 for your lunch reservation. Walk-ins are welcome.
At the Senior Center we are doing more than eating in December. On Mondays at noon we will be watching local videos and Christmas movies. We have found a box of Senior Center photographs and we need help identifying people in the photos, when and where they were taken. Stop by to see the photos and help with identification.
Check the Senior Center calendar for more activities.
Join our group on Monday, December 28 for the Christmas Caroling Dinner at Naniboujou Lodge. For dinner, entertainment, transportation, tax and tip the cost is $54.00. Reservations are due by December 15.
This winter we are planning a sleigh ride, dog sled rides, and lunches at some great local restaurants. Our trips keep folks active and connected to the community. Senior Center trips are planned for adults of all ability levels, aged 50 plus, and are open to everyone. How about joining your favorite senior friend or relative to create memories on the sleigh ride or on another trip?
We have gift certificates in any amount available at the Senior Center for use on Senior Center trips or merchandise. Many of our seniors have limited income available for activities and would love the gift of a trip. If you do not know any seniors in need, we will be happy to put your gift to use for a deserving senior.
Finding the right gift for your favorite senior may be difficult. A gift of your time is always the most appreciated. How about a gift of regular visits to a senior? Bring a hot dish or soup to share for supper. Do not forget to clean up the dishes afterward. Schedule regular lunches at a senior’s favorite restaurant. Offer to help sort and distribute a relative’s family memorabilia. Bring the children for an afternoon to share old photos and stories. Take a senior for a drive to see some of their old haunts. Offer regular snow shoveling, house-cleaning, or yard work. Seniors often enjoy reading, but have vision problems, so a book on tape is a good gift. Books of crossword, Sudoku, or word search puzzles are winners as stocking stuffers.
Let’s remember our senior citizens this holiday season and in 2010.
