Normally Grand Marais is safe, safe enough to leave house and vehicles unlocked, but maybe not anymore.
Someone, a burglar or group of burglars, has been checking to see if doors and windows are locked. If they are open, that’s an invitation to come in and pilfer money and other items.
One elderly lady’s home was broken into several times recently and her purse was stolen and recovered later with all of the money taken from it.
The break-ins have been keeping area locksmiths and Cook County sheriff deputies busy.
Cook County Sheriff Pat Eliasen commented on the recent criminal activity.
“In October we had several vehicles tampered with during one weekend. I can’t divulge specific information due to the case as it is currently under investigation, but all of the vehicles were in the Grand Marais area as well as the immediate surrounding area.
“We are thinking that the suspects are in their teens or at least younger people due to the items that were taken. In one case there was a new tool set in the front seat of the vehicle that was passed over as the suspect(s) looked in the console area. It appeared that the suspect(s) were looking for cash only. My advice to the public is to lock their vehicles and don’t leave any valuables inside of them.
“In November we had two dwellings burglarized. One was a local business and the other was a private residence. Money, liquor and electronics were taken as a result of these crimes. The business was unoccupied at the time of the burglary but the residence was not. There was a person sleeping inside the residence during the crime.
“My advice here is to lock your doors when you are away from your residence and when you are sleeping. If you notice anyone or anything suspicious, please dial 218-387-3030 or 911 and report it to law enforcement.
“If anyone has any information that would lead to the arrest of the people responsible for these crimes, please contact me and we will do our best to keep your name confidential if you so wish.”
