One of the most entertaining aspects of Mush for a Cure—at least for the audience—is the Bald, Brave and Beautiful (BBB) head-shaving competition. For the BBB participants, it’s painful, but these brave souls take part anyway, raising money to fight breast cancer.
In 2014, Mush for a Cure organizers are excited to announce their first ever woman in the Bald, Brave and Beautiful competition, Ana Genz. Ana is a breast cancer survivor and was the 2012 Mush for a Cure honoree.
She bravely signed on to have her lovely black hair cut—and shaved off—if she raises enough money. She wrote, “As many of my family and friends know this organization is very near and dear to my heart. As a 16-year survivor, this year my donation will be my hair. I will be donating my hair to Locks of Love and in support to those who have fought and are fighting breast cancer I will be shaving my head.”
Ana will once again take part in the mushing long run. She said, “My dogs will be running on a strong eight dog team pulling for a cure.”
Ana will be facing not one, but two local men, who hope to top her goal of $6,000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Cory Christianson, fishing guide and Cook County News- Herald outdoors columnist, has volunteered to lose his hair if friends and family raise enough money. His weekly Tails from the Trail is filled with fishing tips, news about local wildlife and charming tales about his wife Rachelle and their two little children. This week’s Tails from the Trail talks a little bit about Mush for a Cure too! At press time, his fundraising page had earned $1,375.
Craig Horak of Grand Marais is the owner of the Tire and Auto Lodge in Grand Marais. A summertime dirt bike racer and a Tofte firefighter, Horak is not afraid of a challenge and he said, “I am putting my ‘head’ on the line for a good cause. Cory Christiansen and I together are trying to raise as much money as Ana Genz…the first woman to put her head on the line for this awesome event!”
Good luck to all of the BBB competitors—and for those who haven’t seen the hilarity before— usually everyone’s head gets shaved, so don’t miss out on the fun Friday night!
