The boys’ basketball team played three games over the last few days and continue to show improvement on the hardwood court.

Floodwood comes to town

When the CCHS Vikings boys’ team squared off against the Floodwood Polar Bears on Friday, January 10, it was a matchup of two 1-6 teams. The game was played at home in the friendly confines of the Pam Taylor gym.

The Vikings got off to a quick 10-point lead and went into the locker room up 26-16.

Second half play started with the Polar Bears losing the ball at half court on a nice steal by senior guard Pete Sutton, who cruised to the basket for a quick layup.

Following a miss by the Polar Bears the Vikings took the ball down court and Austin Lincoln, shooting from about 12 feet, put the ball in the hoop. Jordan Porter made a seven footer to make the score 32-16. The Polar Bears managed two baskets but that was mitigated by Adam Dorr’s long two and Lincoln, who netted another two point shot, which made the score 38-20.

The Polar Bears made a nice run with about seven minutes to play, bringing the score to 47-37, but going down the stretch the Vikings outscored the Polar Bears 13-1.

On that final tear, Jordan Porter made back-to-back baskets, and Pete Sutton scored the last six points for the Vikings, one on a two-handed stuff that brought the crowd to its feet.

The Vikings won going away, 60-38.

Once again senior guard Pete Sutton led the Vikings with 28 points. Jordan Porter scored 17, Austin Lincoln netted 11, Adam Dorr finished with 2, and Tate Crawford ended his night with 2 points.

Following the win, head coach Colin Everson said, “We are starting to put some pieces together. Defensively, we are starting to find spots and push the ball to places we want it. We are continually putting an emphasis on controlling the glass. This is allowing us to be more consistent on the boards but we still have room to improve.”

“Offensively, we are starting to work together, space the floor better, move without the ball and have increased our points per possession over the past few games.”

“There is always room to improve but its great to see some of the small things we focus on starting to contribute to games. We are starting to hit the bulk of our season and looking forward to what we can do.”

Vikings versus Ely

The Vikings played the Ely Timberwolves at home the next day, a Saturday afternoon contest that resulted in a 76-57 win for Ely.

Pete Sutton continued his streak of scoring more than 20 points in a game by netting 25 against the always-tough Timberwolves’ team. Jordan Porter finished with 13, Austin Lincoln 10, Jacob Dorr 4, Adam Dorr 3, and Keegan Morrison finished with 2 points in the game.

Vikings beat Silver Bay

On Tuesday, January 14, the Silver Bay Mariners came to town to face the Vikings in a friendly North Shore rivalry, with the Vikings taking a 62-48 win.

Pete Sutton, who practices basketball year round, is showing what hard work can do. The senior guard Sutton put on a scoring barrage against the Mariners, finishing with 34 points. So far Pete is averaging 27.2 points per game.

Senior forward Jordan Porter is also having a great senior year. He ended his night with 18 points. Jacob Dorr added 4 points, Adam Dorr 3, and Keegan Morrison finished with 3 points to complete the scoring for the Vikings.

Next, the Vikings play Carlton at Carlton on Friday, January 17, and then play at home on Tuesday, January 21, against Mesabi East. That game starts at 4:45 p.m. Come out and cheer for your Vikings!
