Boys win two games as season winds down

Colton Furlong has wielded a hot bat for the Vikings as of late. The junior has also been a demon on the base paths, stealing whenever he gets the chance and causing disruption for the defense.

Dillon Sjogren took the win from the mound for the Cook County Vikings in their Monday, May 22 game against the Wrenshall Wrens in a game played at Wrenshall.

Sjogren pitched five innings, giving up one run, two hits and struck out four batters.

Erik Lawler relieved Sjogren with two outs in the fifth.

Andrew Miller relieved Lawler after a walk and two errors brought Wrenshall to within one run with two outs in the sixth. Vikings’ bats came alive, however, in the seventh, as seven runs were plated.

“Early,” said head coach Arleigh Jorgenson, “it was the Colton Furlong and Josh Prom show. Both reached five times. Colton scored four times and Josh three.

“Colton stole four bases and Josh stole twice. In the third, Prom moved to third on consecutive errors and then scored when Andrew Miller raced to second on a walk. In the confusion, Josh was able to score.

“In some ways the game was ugly, we did throw the ball around late. But, it also had its beauty,” said Coach Jorgenson.

“While the bats did come alive late, it was aggressive base running by Colton and Josh that took control of the game right away in the first inning.

“Sjogren pitched well, as did Lawler and Miller. It was a much needed win and we went home happy.”

Colton Furlong led Viking batters by going 3 for 3 from the plate, scoring four runs and stealing three bases. Josh Prom was 2 for 3, knocking in two RBIs, and scoring three runs.

Gavin John led the Wrens by going 2 for 4 and driving in two RBIs.

The Vikings record is 5-8 on the year, and 3-7 in the conference to rank seventh out of 11 teams.

Miller throws a shutout

The Vikings traveled to Carlton on Wednesday, May 24 to play the Bulldogs in a conference rematch. Early in the season the Bulldogs beat the Vikings badly. A win would push the Vikings up a rung in the pecking order for playoffs, so the Vikings put their top hurler, sophomore Andrew Miller, on the mound and hoped for the best.

Turns out it was a good decision.

“This was a rematch with Carlton,” Jorgenson said. “They had ten-runned us early in the season. It was a different story today.” Miller threw a no-hit shutout. He issued three walks, worked around three errors, and struck out seven.

“Colton Furlong and Josh Prom again led our offense, but it was a full team performance. Furlong, Prom, Curran, and Roy each scored twice. Andrew Miller and Dillon Sjogren each had two hits. No Vikings failed to reach base. There were eight hits and 10 walks and four stolen bases. This was a well-played game all-around by the Vikings, and the final score, 11-0 in five innings was the result.

“We travel to Soudan on Friday to face North East Range for the regular season finale. Playoffs will begin on May 30, likely in Proctor.”
