On a cold day with temperatures hovering in the negative teens, the boys slalom ski team won their home meet held at Lutsen ski hill. The girls had two top finishes but didn’t have four girls complete the race so they didn’t qualify in the team scoring.
The three team race was held between Cook County, Hibbing and VAST (Virginia Area Alpine Ski Team) on February 14.
Jacob McCarthy of Hibbing won the boys’ race by 2.5 seconds, a wide margin, however CCHS skiers took the next five places with the top four places counted in team scoring.
Cy Oberholtzer led the charge with a second place, Ben Obinger was third, Ray Dressley fourth, Finn Taylor fifth and Elijah Blanck, sixth. Placing ninth was Georgi Dimitrov, with Andrew Hallberg finishing 14th and Reuben Youngdahl taking 17th place.
Viking girls race
Maddy Clusiau from Hibbing took the crown in the girls’ race with a time of 1:48.15.
Kalina Dimitrova led the Vikings with a second place finish, trailing Clusiau by about five seconds. Sophia Blanck finished fourth and AnnaBelle Silence placed 12th.
Alie Duclos completed one run but crashed on her second run and Genevieve Silence also completed one run but didn’t complete her first run. Liv Hedstrom didn’t compete at this meet.
Head Coach John Oberholtzer had strong praise for his young skiers who battled hard on a cold, cold day.
“It was -20F when we were setting up the course and it warmed up a little for the skiers,” said John, adding, “But it was never warm. The kids skied really well and it’s fun to watch them improve.”
