The Cook County High School boys’ varsity tennis team defeated Hermantown, 4-3, Monday, April 11, to win its first match of the season and the first ever varsity tennis match for the CCHS boys. This is the first year for varsity tennis for both the girls’ team (who played in fall 2010) and the boys, who play in the spring.
Cook County Junior Captain David Bergstrom won at No. 1 singles defeating Jeremy Amys of Hermantown, 6-1,6-0. Amys was a formidable opponent, as he finished 3rd in the section 7A tennis meet last year.
Eighth-grader Lars Scannell won at No. 2 singles defeating Joe Gustafson of Hermantown, 7-6 (4), 6-3. Lars’s win is especially impressive since he is normally right-handed and he had to play with a fractured right pinky finger in a splint. He used his left hand during much of the match. Lars injured his finger last Thursday playing catch with a football.
Seventh-grader Pete Summers won at No. 3 singles defeating the Hawks’ Aaron Cook 6-4,6-1. Pete had to play under a lot of pressure because he played the last and deciding match, which clinched the win for Cook County.
The Vikings had to forfeit the No. 4 singles because they didn’t have enough players.
Sophomore Justin Goldstein and eighth-grader Daniel Ahrendt of Cook County won at No. 1 doubles defeating Brett Sterk and Jesse Dyson, 6-3,6-4.
Viking Sophomore Collin Berglund and eighth-grader Jamie Wick lost a tough match at No. 2 doubles to the Hawks’ Brody Dammer and Sean Gibbon 6-4,6-3.
The Vikings had to forfeit the No. 3 doubles because they didn’t have enough players. So the Vikings won 4 of the 5 matches they were able to play.
The Vikings’ next varsity tennis match will be at Duluth Central, Thursday, April 14 at 4:15 p.m.
