The Cook County High School boys’ varsity tennis team won its first ever home varsity tennis match, Friday, May 6, 2011, against the Duluth Central-Denfeld Trojans. A large crowd of supporters came out on a beautiful spring day to cheer on the Viking team and find out what a varsity tennis match looks like. The Vikings gave their fans plenty to cheer about as they defeated Duluth Central-Denfeld 4-3, winning 4 of the 5 matches they played. The Vikings had lost to Duluth Central- Denfeld, earlier this season.
The boys’ varsity tennis team improved their record to 2-3.
At No. 1 singles, junior captain David Bergstrom (CC) remained undefeated this season dominating Caleb Reder (DCD), 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 2 singles, eighth-grader Lars Scannell (CC) defeated Kyle Stupca (DC-D), 6-2, 6-2.
At No. 3 singles, seventh-grader Pete Summers (CC) ran out of gas after playing a great first set against a tough opponent. Pete ended up splitting sets and losing to Brendan Johnson (DC-D) in a third set tiebreaker, 6-7 (1), 6-2, tiebreaker 10-0.
The Vikings had to forfeit the No. 4 singles match for lack of players.
At No. 1 doubles, sophomores Justin Goldstein (CC) and Colin Berglund (CC) defeated Mike Stukel (DC-D) and Matt Skurich (DC-D), 6-1, 6-2.
At No. 2 doubles, eighth graders Daniel Ahrendt (CC) and Jamie Wick (CC) defeated Joey Erickson (DC-D) and Bryan Mlodozyniec (DC-D), 6-4, 6-1.
The Vikings had to forfeit the No. 3 doubles match for lack of players.
The boys’ varsity tennis team faced Eveleth-Gilbert at home on Tuesday, May 10.
