The Cook County High School boys’ varsity tennis team traveled to Virginia, MN, Monday, April 18 to take on last year’s Section 7A champion, Virginia High School. This was the second match of the season for the young Viking team, while Virginia had already played four matches against other teams.

The Vikings knew this would be a tough match going in, but they were excited to see how they measured up against one of the best teams in their section. When it was all over, the Vikings ended up losing 5-2 to a strong Virginia team. The match was played at a nice tennis facility, in Virginia, that has four indoor tennis courts. Playing indoors was another new experience for some of the Viking players.

The Vikings’ junior captain, David Bergstrom, won at No. 1 singles, defeating a tough opponent, junior Blair Seitz of Virginia, 6-2, 6-3.

Eighth-grader Lars Scannell also won a tough match at No. 2 singles, defeating senior John Morgan of Virginia, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. Lars has been playing with a broken pinky finger on his right playing hand.

Seventh-grader Pete Summers lost at No. 3 singles to senior Garrett Hendrickson of Virginia, 6-1, 6-0. Pete had a number of close games, but couldn’t win enough big points to finish the games.

The Vikings had to forfeit the No. 4 singles match, again, because they didn’t have enough players.

Sophomore Justin Goldstein and eighth-grader Daniel Ahrendt, of Cook County, lost at No. 1 doubles to seniors Cody Mauston and Troy Nichols of Virginia, 6-2, 6-1.

Sophomore Collin Berglund and eighth-grader Jamie Wick were defeated at No. 2 doubles by seniors Jace Friedlieb and Tom Norlander of Virginia, 6-3, 6-1.

The Vikings had to forfeit the No. 3 doubles, again, because they didn’t have enough players.

So, the Vikings won 2 of the 5 matches they were able to play.

The Vikings’ next varsity tennis matches will be in Duluth, next week, against Duluth Central on April 27 and Duluth East on April 28.
