The Cook County High School boys’ varsity tennis team traveled to Duluth last week to take on Duluth Central and Duluth East.

On Wednesday, April 27, the boys’ tennis team played Duluth Central at the College of St. Scholastica’s indoor field house, because of the poor weather conditions. The smooth rubber indoor playing surface was much faster than the players were used to, but it was the same for both teams. Duluth Central ended with the win, 6-1, but the matches were closer than the score indicates.

Junior captain David Bergstrom won the only match for the Vikings, at No. 1 singles, defeating Chad Bolen (DC), 6-1, 6-2.

Eighth grader Lars Scannell lost his first match this season at No. 2 singles, falling to Corey Bolen (DC) in a third set tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-3, 10-8.

Tenth-grader Collin Berglund played No. 3 singles for the Vikings, losing to Ethan Meyers (DC), 6-3, 6-3.

The Vikings had to forfeit the No. 4 singles match for lack of enough players.

Duluth Central’s No. 1 doubles team, Brendan Johnson and Aaron Stinson, defeated sophomore Justin Goldstein (CC) and eighth-grader Daniel Ahrendt (CC), 6-2, 6-4.

At No. 2 doubles, eighthgrader Jamie Wick (CC) and seventh-grader Pete Summers (CC) were defeated by Caleb Reder (DC) and Reece Johnson (DC), 6-3, 6-0.

Again, the Vikings had to forfeit their match at No. 3 doubles because they didn’t have enough players.

On Thursday, April 28, the boys’ varsity tennis team traveled to Duluth, again, to take on a strong Duluth East tennis team. Duluth East has had a strong tennis program for many years. The weather was perfect for this match and the Vikings came close to upsetting Duluth East, losing 4-3.

At No. 1 singles, junior captain David Bergstrom (CC) defeated junior Bauer LaSavage (DE), 6-4, 6-3.

At No. 2 singles, eighth grader Lars Scannell (CC) defeated sophomore Peder Norr (DE), 3-6, 6-3, 7-5.

At No. 3 singles, seventh grader Pete Summers (CC) defeated junior Alex Anderson (DE), 6-4, 6-4.

The Vikings had to forfeit their No. 4 singles match, again, for lack of players.

At No. 1 doubles, Duluth East seniors Greg Peckham and Carson Kolodge defeated sophomore Justin Goldstein (CC) and eighth-grader Daniel Ahrendt (CC), 6-1, 7-6 (1).

At No. 2 doubles, Duluth East senior Daniel Nielsen and junior Bill Renier defeated Cook County sophomore Collin Berglund and eighth grader Jamie Wick, 6-1, 6-2.

The Vikings had to forfeit the No. 3 doubles match, again, for lack of players.

Despite losing the team score, 4-3, to Duluth East, the Vikings won three of the five matches they played.

The Viking tennis team’s next two matches will be at home, Friday, May 6, 4:00 p.m. (vs. Duluth Central) and Tuesday, May 10, 4:00 p.m. (vs. Eveleth-Gilbert).

Come and support our team!
