The Cook County boys’ basketball team traveled to Wrenshall last Friday, January 24 to play the Wrenshall Wrens.

After a slow start, the Vikings ramped up their play and led 39-26 at halftime and won 82-53.

“We played well,” said head coach Colin Everson. “We started off slow, but picked up some rhythm in the second half. Wrenshall played an extended 2-3 zone, which was good because we have struggled with our spacing and movement versus a zone thus far. We were able to improve our spacing and move the ball better as a team as well as make some shots which always helps against a zone.”

“The Vikings finished the game with eight players who scored points, which always makes it tough on defense when a team has a lot of players who can put the ball in the hoop. Getting to the free throw line more consistently has also helped the Vikings immensely,” said Coach Everson.

“In our last two games we have shot 35 and 29 free throws, which means we have been attacking offensively, which is one of our focuses,” Coach Everson said.

Seniors Pete Sutton, 27 points and Jordan Porter, 22 points, led the team. The other Vikings who scored points were: Austin Lincoln finished with 9, Keegan Morrison had 9, Jacob Dorr 6, Paul Dorr 5, Derek Smith 2, and Devon Premo had 2 points for the Vikings.

“We have plenty of areas to improve in but we are starting to build our identity as a team,” added the coach.

The boys’ next game is at home versus Two Harbors on Friday, January 31. The game starts at 4:45 p.m.

The team has two away games: one on February 7 against Barnum and one on February 11 against Silver Bay. They play at home again on February 13 against Duluth Marshall. That game is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. Come out and cheer for your Vikings!
