Boys suffer losses to Silver Bay and Ely

A big plus for this year’s boys’ basketball team has been their ability to put points on the board when they needed them, but the offense mostly sputtered in the squad’s two losses last week to the Ely Timberwolves and the Silver Bay Mariners.

The Vikings traveled to Silver Bay on Friday, Jan. 12 to take on a talented Mariner team and fell 48-31.

“We really played great defense in Silver Bay, but our offense is really struggling,” said head coach Mitch Dorr. “We need to find some chemistry, and Silver Bay’s 1-3-1 zone really bothered our guys.”

The Vikings trailed 25-16 at the half and only managed to make 15 points in the second half.

Will Ramberg led the team in scoring with 11 points, Dyami Blackwell had 8 points, Jordan Porter 6 points, Pete Sutton 5 points, and Trusen Gordon had 1 point in the game. Vikings lose to Timberwolves

Ely seems to have the Vikings’ number when it comes to boys’ basketball, as once again the Vikings fell to the Timberwolves, this time 60-39 in a game played at home on Saturday, Jan. 13.

At halftime, the Vikings were down by nine points, 18-27, well within reach of a comeback, but the Vikings only managed to score 21 points in the second half while the Timberwolves padded their lead by adding 33 points.

“Our offense continued to sputter vs. Ely the next day,” said coach Dorr. “Our defense continues to improve, but we need to find better chemistry.”

Pete Sutton found his shooting touch against Ely, scoring 16 points. Dyami Blackwell and Jordan Porter each had 8 points, Will Lamb 4 points, and Adam Dorr 3 points.

The Vikings play(ed) Carlton tonight, Jan. 19 at home with a 6:30 p.m. game time start. On Tuesday Mesabi East will come to town to play the Vikings in a game that starts at 4:45 p.m.
