The Cook County Boys’ basketball team hosted the Moose Lake Willow River (MLWR) basketball team on Monday, January 30, and ran into a buzz saw.

Behind forcing turnovers for easy lay-ups with their double teaming and sometime triple teaming the man with the ball on their press, Moose Lake Will River jumped off to a big lead, going into the locker room leading 51-12 at the half.

On offense the Rebels used quick passes to overload the Vikings defense and throw the ball over the top of the defense to a wide-open player for a three-point try— which was all too often good– or they would pass it to their center at the top of the free throw line and he would look for a cutter going to the basket.

MLWR came into the game sporting a 9-6 overall record, 3-1 in their AA conference, so it was going to be a tall order for the Class A, 3-8 Vikings to compete against the Rebels.

Coming out for the second half the Vikings scored some quick baskets to finally get their offense going. Derek Smith took a rebound the length of the court for a lay-up. Recko Helmerson-Skildum scored on a nice midrange jump shot, Jordan Backstrom hit a 15-foot jumper, Amos Falter fought through the defense for a short pull-up two pointer, and Denali Blackwell hit backto back three-point shots and scored on a floater in the lane to put some juice back into the game. Still, it was too late, with the Rebels taking a 92-43 win.

Boys travel to Floodwood

On Tuesday, January 31, the Vikings traveled to Floodwood to play the Polar Bears. The Vikings lost 67-56 to the Polar Bears in Grand Marais on January 6, so this rematch was going to be against an opponent they had played close before. Story on B2.
