A young Viking boy’s team is improving, but having trouble finding a way to get in the win column. The team lost three games this week, but two of the losses were close. Poor shooting seems to plague the Vikings, but there is no quit in the players on defense.

Vikings versus Wrenshall

Cook County boys played a tough game against the Wrenshall Wrens last Thursday night, but fell short, losing 56-46.

Early on the Wrens, using a three two three quarter court press, pushed to an 8-0 lead and it looked like it was going to be a blowout. Tate Crawford finally got the team on the scoreboard on a two point shot and that seemed to ignite the Vikings. Before long the score was 9-8 and then 14-11 in favor of the Vikings.

However, the Wrens went on a run of their own and took a 22-17 lead into halftime. The Vikings tied the score at 24-24 before starting to tire. The Wrens had a large roster of players and substituted liberally throughout the game. Down 52-35, the Vikings fought back and closed the gap but with the clock against them, it was too late.

Overall Tate Crawford had a great game for the Vikings. Tate scored 18 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. At 5’10”, Tate might be the smallest center in the conference.

Paul Dorr finished with 13 points. Derek Smith had 11. Jacob Dorr had 4. Enrique Henriquez had 3 steals. The lighting quick Henriquez also had a lot of tipped balls and he was a hugely disrupted force on defense.

“The boys played with great effort but came up short,” said head Coach Andy Feddema. “We didn’t shoot very well tonight and that was a big factor in the outcome. I’m very proud of how we battled to the very end.”

Vikings fall to Silver Bay

Cook County was down 25-18 at the half in their game against the Silver Bay Mariners last Monday night, but fought back to keep the score close, often trailing by three or four points. However, once again poor shooting, especially at the free throw line, doomed a good effort and the Vikings fell 52-39.

Paul Dorr led the way with 18 points. Tate Crawford had seven points and six rebounds, Jacob Dorr had five points and seven rebounds. Derek Smith had six. Ethan Poulin had three. Enrique Henriquez had three steals.

Vikings fall to Timberwolves

On Tuesday, March 2 the Vikings traveled to Ely to play the Timberwolves and lost 76-22.

“”We played hard and never quit,” said head coach Andy Feddema. “I’m very proud of the guys for their effort.”

Paul Dorr led the way with 10 points, Tate Crawford had five, Derek Smith had five, and Jacob Dorr had three points. Enrique Henriquez had three steals.

The boys have two more games on the schedule and two games to make up before play-offs start mid-March.
