Boys lose to Moose Lake/Willow River

The Vikings’ baseball team played the first double header game in Ely on Saturday, May 21, first facing off against the Moose Lake/Willow River (MLWR) boys team before playing Ely in the second game.

MLWR put up two runs in the first inning and used a big seven-run third inning to take a commanding nine to three lead into the fourth. The Lakers added two in the fourth, four in the fifth, and two in the sixth to win 17-6.

The Vikings rallied in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs after the first two batters were out. J Shannon led off and ground out to the shortstop, whose throw beat Shannon to first. Hunter Gomez popped up to the shortstop for the second out.

Up next, a pitch hit Kole Anderson and Jake Mixdorf was sent in to run for him. Benelli Myers moved Mixdorf to second on a single to center field. C. Smith singled to load the bases. Hunter Rex singled to score Mixdorf, and the bases were still loaded. Ethan Tate walked, which brought Myers in for a run. Jake Mixdorf kept the rally going with an RBI single that scored Cade Sith. Amos Falter’s long fly ball to the left fielder was caught to end the rally.

Ethan Tate was on the mound for the Vikings. He pitched 2.1 innings giving up six hits and eight runs before being relieved by Hunter Gomez. Hunter pitched three innings, allowing seven runs on five hits while striking out four. Cy Oberholtzer closed the game, pitching less than an inning. He gave up one hit, two runs, and struck out one.

Virtually all starters got one hit in the game: Amos Falter, J Shannon, Hunter Gomez, Kole Anderson, Benelli Myers, Cade Smith, Cy Oberholtzer, Hunter Rex, Ethan Tate, and Jake Mixdorf. Landon Shiels didn’t get a hit, but he walked in his only plate appearance.
