Last year’s 3A Minnesota State basketball champions, the Esko Eskimos, ventured north on Friday, February 6 and beat the Cook County High School Viking boys’ team 89-27.
For the first four minutes of the game Esko was shooting bricks, enough to build a small house. But, said Head Coach Pat Eliasen, “We had our chances to make a statement at that time but we went down and took hurried shots. If we could have settled down a little bit, hit a few shots, we might have gained some confidence and been able to stay with them for awhile.”
Unfortunately Esko finally started to score, rattling the Vikings’ defense, and meanwhile the Vikings continued to struggle from the field.
“We didn’t play well,” said Coach Pat Eliasen. “Especially on the defensive side of the court.
“There’s not a lot to say on a loss like that. Right now we’re working on restoring some confidence not only on the team but with the fans as well. We’re working to improve the defense for the remaining games this year and beginning a discussion on where we want to be as a team in the future,” said Eliasen.
The Vikings play three home games next week. The first game will be a make up game against Cromwell Monday, February 16 at 2:30 p.m. They play Lakeview Christian (Bjorn Broman is averaging 48 points per game) at 6:30 p.m. on February 17 and then they face South Ridge on Friday, February 20 at 4:45. Come out and cheer on your Vikings!
