On February 3, the Cook County High School boys’ basketball team took the long trip to Barnum to face the always tough Barnum Bombers.
“Barnum is a very quick and up-tempo team, and we struggled to control their pace,” said Viking Head Coach Andy Feddema. “We hung around for the first part of the first half, but eventually it got away from us. Despite the score, as always I’m very proud of the effort our boys gave.”
The Vikings lost 91-42. With the win Barnum’s record is now 10-4, and the Vikings record is 2-12.
Junior guard Paul Dorr led the Vikings 17 points and six rebounds, Derek Smith followed with 13 points. Jacob Dorr had four points and five rebounds. Isaac Sandstrom and Ryan Smith each had three points. Recko Helmerson-Skildum added a bucket.
Hill City
On Friday, February 4 the Vikings played the Hill City Hornets and fell 63-47 loss. Both teams came in with identical 2-12 records, so this was a contest of who would take care of the ball better.
Turns out this time around it was the Hornets.
“Turnovers really hurt us tonight,” said Coach Feddema. “We struggled to control the ball for a good portion of the game. Shots didn’t fall for us, which didn’t help. But our boys battled all the way until the end, they never quit.”
Once again Paul Dorr led the Vikings with 23 points and 14 rebounds. “He really worked hard on the offensive glass,” Coach Feddema said. Junior guard Derek Smith added nine points and seven rebounds. Senior forward Jacob Dorr had seven points and seven rebounds. Freshman guard Rohan Rude nailed two threes, scoring six points, and sophomore forward Recko Helmerson-Skildum added two points and had five rebounds.
