Boys lose to Barnum

The Cook County boys’ varsity baseball team traveled to Barnum on May 11 to face an always tough Barnum Bomber team.

A fast early start gave Barnum an 8-0 lead after two innings. The Bombers used timely hits and a couple of Viking errors to score four big runs in each of those innings.

Meanwhile the Vikings were only able to score one run in the second and one run in the fourth to trail 8-2. Barnum added one more run in the fifth before the Vikings offense came alive in the seventh. During the seventh inning the Vikings put four runs on the score board. Still, it was too little too late, and Barnum took a 9-6 victory over our Vikings.

Just like the girls did in their loss to the Barnum girls, the boys out hit Barnum ten to eight.

In the seventh inning, singles by Patrick Pierre and Tate Crawford and a sacrifice fly by Hunter Gomez provided much needed offense, but it wasn’t enough and the Vikings lost 9-6.

Both of Barnum’s first two big innings were helped by timely hitting and errors committed by the usually sure-handed Vikings.

Barnum’s Caleb Hautajarvi was the winning pitcher. Caleb gave up four runs on eight hits over six innings, striking out eight. He was relieved by Henry Dammer, who pitched one inning of relief out of the bullpen.

Jacob Dorr took the loss for the Vikings. Jacob surrendered seven runs on five hits in one and one-third innings, striking out three. Tate Crawford came in to relieve Jacob, and Tate pitched 4.2 innings. Tate gave up two runs and three hits, striking out six while not allowing a walk.

Ray Dresseley, Tate Crawford, and Hunter Gomez had multiple hits for the Vikings.

In a telling statistic, the Vikings ended the game with six errors to two for the Bombers.
