Freshman guard Denali Blackwell led a young Cook County Vikings team with 20 points and four rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a seasoned Two Harbor’s Agate team who defeated the Vikings 80-46 on Monday, January 3.
The game was played in Grand Marais in the Pam Taylor gymnasium.
Two Harbors got to the basket often, breaking the Viking’s man-to-man defense. Meanwhile the Agates used a collapsing zone that saw Viking players double teamed down low or double teamed in the corners. It was an effective “help” defense that often stymied the Vikings, causing turnovers and stops. The Vikings often got one shot at the basket as Two Harbors controlled the boards on both sides of the ball.
After the game Viking Head Coach Andy Feddema said, “It was a tough night for us. Two Harbors is a good team, and really found a way to penetrate and attack the basket. We have to do a better job of stopping the ball and helping on defense as a team. As always, I am proud of our effort all the way until the end. The guys battled, and we are continually working to improve as a team.”
Paul Dorr finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Jacob Dorr had five points and four rebounds. Derek Smith had three points and four rebounds. Isaac Sandstrom and Rohan Rude each had three points.
The Vikings next four games are away. They face Lakeview, Wrensahll, Cherry, and Carlton on the road before coming home to play Hill City on a Saturday on January 15 at 1:45 p.m. Then it’s four more road games before playing Floodwood at home on February 1 at 6:30 p.m.
