With the regular season coming to a close the Vikings played one home game last week, and one road game scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 20 at Floodwood High School was cancelled due to the inclement weather.
The Vikings got plenty of good looks at the basket against Moose Lake/Willow River last Friday night at home, but the ball wouldn’t fall. Shot after shot found the metal rim, but not enough shots fell through the soft strings of the net to make any sweet “swishing” music for the team who fell 77-48 to the Moose Lake/Willow River Rebels.
“We were down 16-35 at the half to a very fast Moose Lake team,” said head coach Mitch Dorr.
With all of the success junior forward Will Ramberg has had on offense averaging about 24 points per game, MLWR was careful to pay a lot of attention to him when the Vikings had possession of the ball. That left other shooters open, and Trusen Gordon responded by scoring 14 points and grabbing six rebounds, but that wasn’t enough.
Dyami Blackwell ended with 10 points and pulled down six rebounds while Ramberg finished with 10 points, six boards and four assists. Pete Sutton put in seven points, Jordan Porter five points and Devon Premo two points.
“Turnovers continue to hurt us,” said coach Dorr, adding his team turned the ball over 22 times against Moose Lake/Willow River.
With the loss the boys’ record fell to 7-14, although the team is 4-4 in the conference. The Rebels’ record following the game went to 14-10.
The boys square off against Nashwauk-Keewatin tonight (Friday, Feb. 23) at home. The game starts at 4:45 p.m. A make-up game will be played at home on March 1 at home against Silver Bay with the game starting at 6:30 p.m.
With no seniors on the roster, the Vikings are young and are in a building year, although they could make some “noise” during the upcoming Section 7 tournament which starts March 5.
