Boys fall to Mountain Iron-Buhl

A young boys’ Viking basketball team opened its 2021-2022 season against a veteran Mountain Iron- Buhl (MI-B) team on Thursday, December 10 in Mountain Iron, and the game was never close, with Cook County falling 72-23.

Derek Smith finished with nine points and four rebounds. Paul Dorr had nine points, Denali Blackwell three points, and Recko Helmerson-Skildum finished with two points and three rebounds.

Two juniors, Asher Zubich and Nikolas Jesch led MI-B.

Zubich netted 27 points, shooting 73 percent on 11 of 15 from the field. Jesch added 22 points while making nine of 16 shots to average 56 percent on the night. Zubich was three out of three from behind the three-point line. Jesch also made three three-point shots out of seven taken.

Vikings’ head Coach Andy Feddema said, “It was a first game wake-up for us for sure. MI-B deserves a lot of credit; they play well together and really put pressure on us. Our kids fought and battled until the final buzzer, and I am very proud of them for that fact.”

The Vikings travel to Moose Lake on Friday, December 17, to play Moose Lake-Willow River.
