Boys beat South Ridge Panthers

After starting out slowly, the CCHS boys’ basketball team picked up their play and ran by the South Ridge Panthers, beating them 84-63.

The Vikings traveled to the Iron Range town of Culver to face the Panthers on Friday, Jan 4 in a conference game.

Will Ramberg, the Vikings’ lone starting senior, once again led the team in scoring with 31 points. Ray Gordon also had a big night, posting 25 points for the evening. Jordon Porter was the only other Viking in double figures, netting 15 points. Adam Dorr had 6, Pete Sutton 5, and Daunte Deschampe had 1 point.

“We got off to a so-so start,” said head coach Colin Everson. “We missed some opportunities on offense and gave up too many easy ones (baskets) on defense.

“During the second half, we tried a press which worked well. We forced some turnovers and got some easy buckets.

“Overall, I am starting to see some things we practice getting used which is good. We still have areas to improve on.

“Overall, it was a good game for us and as always we have a lot to learn which is the best part.”

The Vikings are now 5-3 on the season and 1-1 in the Polar Big (school) standings. Esko is in first place with a 2-0 conference record. Moose Lake/ Willow River is 2-1, Barnum 1-1, Vikings 1-1, South Ridge 0-1, and Two Harbors is 0-2.

Next up is a home game on Friday, Jan. 11 against the McGregor Mercs. Both teams take the floor at 4:45 p.m. The Vikings travel to Esko on January 15 and then come home to play the Silver Bay Mariners on Jan. 17 at 6:30 p.m. Come out to cheer on your Vikings!
