Boys beat Northwoods, fall to MIB, and take a doubleheader

Between make-up games lost to weather and regularly scheduled games, the Vikings boys’ baseball team has been jam-packed over the last week. And all of those games seem to be good tonic for the team as their errors have gone down, hitting has improved and pitching become much more solid which has led them to some much-needed wins.

Vikings topple Northwoods

In the second game of a doubleheader, the Vikings received solid pitching and timely hitting in their 5-1 victory over North Woods in a match played at home on Thursday, May 18.

Ethan Tate took the mound for the Vikings. He pitched four strong innings allowing two hits and no runs while striking out six and walking three.

Landon Sheils pitched 1.2 innings of relief. Landon walked four and struck out three while allowing one run. Jake Mixdorf finished the game pitching 1.1 innings. Jake didn’t give up a hit, a walk, a run, or a strikeout, as the fielders did all the work on the outs.

J Shannon was 4-4 from the plate with one RBI. Jake Mixdorf was 2-3, Kole Anderson was 1-3 with an RBI, Cade Smith was 1-3 with an RBI, and Ethan Tate had one hit in three at-bats. The Vikings ended with ten hits to two for Northwoods.

Northwoods recorded two errors to one for the Vikings.

Vikings lose to Mountain Iron-Buhl

Visiting Mountain Iron-Buhl Rangers (MIB) beat the Vikings 13-1 in five innings on Thursday, May 18, in a game that ended early because of the ten-run rule.

The Vikings played North Woods following their loss to MIB.

Amos Falter pitched four innings. Amos gave up six runs, allowed two hits, walked seven and struck out four. Cade Smith came in to relieve Amos pitching one inning.

In their Thursday, May 18 match in Grand Marais, the Vikings struggled at the plate and in the field, making four errors while MIB played error-free ball.

Vikings clip the wings of Blackduck

The Vikings traveled to Ely and Suoudan on Saturday, May 20, to play a doubleheader and came home with two more wins.

Against Blackduck, the Vikings prevailed 13-9.

After falling behind 1-0 after the first inning, the Vikings tied the score 2-2 in the second. Then, the Vikings went up for good by scoring four runs in the third and three in the fourth to lead 9-4. However, Blackduck shut down the Viking’s offense in the fifth while pushing four runs across the plate to trail by one going into the sixth.

A three-run rally in the sixth while shutting out Blackduck put the Vikings up by four with one inning to play. Each team scored a run, and the Vikings left the field with a win.

Hunter Gomez pitched five innings for the Vikings. Hunter gave up eight hits, struck out four, walked six, and allowed eight runs. Jake Mixdorf finished the game. Jake allowed three hits and one run and walked one batter in two innings.

Hunter Gomez recorded three hits in five at-bats. He scored two runs and had two RBIs. Hunter Rex was three of six at the plate. He finished with two RBIs and scored one run. Shannon ended with two hits, one RBI and scored one run. Landon Sheils had one hit and two walks in three plate appearances. Kole Anderson, Benelli Myers, and Cade Smith each finished with one hit in the game.

Vikings beat Lake of the Woods

In the second game of the day on Saturday, May 20, the Vikings came up with a 7-2 victory over Lake of the Woods.

Neither team scored in the first; the score was 1-1 after the second. Cook County scored two in the third while shutting out Lake of the Woods in the third. The Vikings added three runs in the fourth and one more in the seventh while allowing one fun in the fifth to take the win.

Kole Anderson had a great day on the mound. Kole pitched a complete game, striking out nine while giving up five hits, two runs and four walks.

Hunter Gomez was 2-3 with one walk and one RBI at the plate. Kole Anderson was 1-2 with two RBIs and one walk, while Hunter Rex, J Shannon, Ethan Tate, Benelli Myers, and Amos Falter each had one hit. Myers finished with two RBIs.

Each team had one error in the game.
