Boys beat McGregor, lose a doubleheader to Ely



The race is on. After postponing multiple games due to snow and some rain, the boys’ baseball team will play a lot of ball in the next few weeks before the weather-shortened season ends. Below is a short report about three games.

Vikings versus the Mercs

Amos Falter had a great day on the mound for the Vikings. Amos pitched a no-hit shutout against the McGregor Mercs on May 4 in a game played in McGregor.

Falter threw five scoreless innings striking out nine and walking three. Meanwhile, the Vikings offense scored one run in the first, one in the second, one in the third, and after being blanked in the fourth, added nine runs in the fifth to take the game 12-0 in a game that ended early because of the tenrun rule.

Kole Anderson was 2-4 at the plate with two doubles and three RBIs. J Shannon had one hit and walked twice in his three at bats. J scored three runs. Hunter Gomez was 1-4 with two RBIs. Ethan Tate was 1-3 with one RBI, and Hunter Rex was 1-3 with one RBI. Benelli Myers was 1-3 with one RBI, and Amos Falter had one hit in three at-bats and scored twice.

Vikings face the Timberwolves in a doubleheader.

The Vikings traveled to Ely on Monday, May 8, to play a doubleheader against the Ely Timberwolves.

Game one was close right to the end. Neither team could score a run until Ely pushed one run across the plate in the fifth. The Timberwolves managed to score two more runs in the sixth, and when the Vikings couldn’t counter in their at-bats in the seventh, the game ended with Ely up 3-0 in a pitcher’s duel.

Ethan Tate pitched 5.2 strong innings for the Vikings, giving up one run.

The Vikings managed to get two hits, one by Amos Falter and one by Cade Smith. In addition, Kole Anderson got on base twice via walks.

Ely got off to a 5-1 lead in the first inning of the second game, and the Vikings couldn’t catch up, falling 9-2.

Neither team scored in the second, and Ely put up one run in the third and fourth innings. Meanwhile, the Vikings scored one run in the fourth but ran out of offense the rest of the way. Ely tacked on two more runs in the seventh.

The Vikings finished with four errors to two for the Timberwolves. Ely had seven hits to three for the Vikings.

The Viking’s next home game is Tuesday, May 16, against Cromwell-Wright. The game will start at 2 p.m. and be played on the Arleigh Jorgenson field at the high school.

On Thursday, May 18, Mountain Iron-Buhl visits and will square off against the Vikings at 2 p.m. North Woods plays the Vikings at 4 p.m. in an exciting doubleheader for the players and fans. So come out and cheer for your Vikings!
