Gaining a four-run advantage in the fourth inning proved to be just enough for the Cook County boys’ baseball team to hold on and beat the Ely Timberwolves 6-5.
With the win the Vikings advanced to the double elimination Section 7-A tournament while Ely’s season was finished.
The game was played Tuesday, June 1, in Hibbing at Bennett Park.
Ray Dressley got the Vikings offense going when he singled on an 0-2 count in the first inning, driving in a run.
Ely tied the score when Mason Davis singled on a 2-0 count, driving in one run.
The Vikings took the lead in the third inning when Jacob Dorr’s sacrifice fly drove in the go ahead run.
Tate Crawford’s double in the fourth inning brought in a run and the Vikings added two more in that inning.
Paul Dorr had an outstanding day on the mound for the Vikings. Paul allowed seven hits and five runs over seven innings, striking out four.
Simons, the Ely pitcher, threw seven innings, allowing eight hits and six runs while striking out three and walking one.
The score was knotted at two all after the first and second innings. The Vikings put up one in the third and three in the fourth while Ely only managed two in the fourth. The Vikings led 6-4 after five.
Senior Tate Crawford was two for four with three RBIs to lead the Vikings offense. Ray Dressley was two for four with one RBI and Kole Anderson was two for three with one RBI. Riley Tarver had a hit and Hunter Gomez also had a hit in the game.
Will Davies and Jacob Trowley each had two hits for the Timberwolves.
The Vikings faced Silver Bay in the second game of the evening and fell 18-10. Just who they played next wasn’t known at press time. From now on any loss the Vikings take will end their tournament hopes.
