The Cook County Boys’ varsity basketball team played two games in the Ely Holiday tournament, both losses, but the court experience was invaluable for his young team, said Head Coach Keaton Riley.
Up first was a game against the host Ely Timberwolves. Ely beat the Vikings 87-22. Sophomore guard Rohan Rude led the team in scoring with nine points.
Binesii Aubid, a junior, and Derek Smith, a senior, both had 3 points. Next was a game against Bigfork. Like the Timberwolves, the Huskies had a strong line-up of veteran players and a solid bench. When the game was over the Vikings had lost 75-30. Junior guard Amos Falter led the team with 11 points. Ryan Smith, a junior, had six points, and Rohan Rude had five points.
“We played two really good, really experienced and disciplined teams and we turned the ball over way too much both games,” said Riley. “We are still struggling with our shot, only shooting 20 percent from the field.
“The good news is we had 12 players play varsity minutes both games and had seven different players’ score. We found out that we have much more depth than years past. We have improved each game, and we compete for good chunks in every game we have played this year, but we are still looking for consistency. We are young, this is something that is best cultivated by playing more.
“Our boys worked hard and did not quit. We have a few really competitive games coming up and we will continue to work on those.”
The boy’s play the Floodwood Polar Bears on Friday, January 6 at 4:45 p.m. in the Pam Taylor gymnasium. The girls’ varsity takes the floor at 6:30 p.m. Come out and cheer for your Vikings!
