In a rematch of a game played one month ago, on Friday, January 6 the Vikings traveled down the shore to face the Two Harbors Agates.
The first time the two teams met was on December 9 at home, and it was a dandy, with the Vikings losing 51-45 in a hotly contested game. This time the Vikings hoped to return the favor but fell 56-42.
Against Two Harbors, one Viking player had a great game, said head coach Mitch Dorr.
“Sam O’Phelan scored 21 points and held their top scorer to 13 points. His play stood out. Other than Sam, no one else on the team scored in double figures.”
“We need to figure things out offensively. We haven’t had everybody at practice for a whole week yet, and that’s hurting us.
“The effort is there. The kids are playing hard, playing tough defense, but we just have to get things worked out so we can score more points.”
The Vikings’ squad is young. Included on the 15-man roster are two seniors, two juniors, six sophomores and five freshmen. Inexperience has cost the hard-working team losses in several close games this year, but a very talented sophomore class is improving by the day and with effort—and consistent practice—the team should start showing up in the win column.
With the loss, the Vikings’ record is now 1-5. Meanwhile, with the win, the Agates upped their record to 5-4.
The Vikings play Floodwood at home on Friday, January 13 at 4:45 p.m. Much like the Vikings, the Polar Bears have struggled to win games this season and will come into the Vikings’ home court sporting a 2-8 record. The next day the Vikings head to Ely to play a talented Timberwolves squad. On January 19 the Vikings will host the Northeast Range Knights in a game that starts at 6:30 p.m. Come out and cheer on your Vikings!
