Conservation archaeologist Bill Clayton will be the next Cook County Higher Education guest lecturer. Clayton, pictured here at an archaeological site, has worked for the U.S Forest Service and is currently the archaeologist and resource program manager for Grand Portage National Monument. His topic will be Before Pristine: 10,000 Years of Native American History in the Boundary Waters.
The next guest lecture sponsored by Cook County Higher Education will feature Bill Clayton, whose topic will be Before Pristine: 10,000 Years of Native American History in the Boundary Waters on Thursday, Nov. 21, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the North Shore Campus in Grand Marais.
The presentation will tell the story of Native American history in the Boundary Waters, based on what we’ve learned from the all-too-fragmentary archaeological record of Native American groups living in and around the region from the end of the last Ice Age to European contact. There will be time for discussion, and there will be refreshments.
Bill Clayton has worked for the past 14 years as a conservation archaeologist and historic preservation specialist for the Superior National Forest. He is currently the archaeologist and resource program manager for Grand Portage National Monument. He has a B.A and M.A. in anthropology from the University of Minnesota.
The Guest Lecture Series of Cook County Higher Education is offered to the community free, although donations are appreciated. The series is sponsored by the Grand Marais State Bank, the Lake Superior Trading Post, Drury Lane Books, George F. Maruska Ltd., Mike’s Holiday, White Pine North, Como Oil & Propane, and Sawbill Outfitters. Refreshments are donated by Beth’s Fudge and Gifts, and Johnson’s Foods.
