On Monday, April 8, Boreal Community Media, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit media organization, announced that it has received a major grant from the Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation to continue its Student Technology Internship program in 2019.
“We are delighted to receive this grant to help support the technology internship program for our Cook County students,” said Boreal Community Media executive director Lisa Bauer.
“With the support of Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation, area students are receiving incredible hands-on experience in the areas of technology and computer science. The experience and insights they receive in this internship program help prepare them for careers in fields of technology.”
The Boreal Community Student Technology Internship program began in 2018 with the initial support of a previous Lloyd K. Johnson grant. In the past 12 months, four students from Cook County Schools participated in the internship program.
Through the program, students assist local community members with technical support for their computers and other devices, tech support duties for Boreal operations, and provided important help during Boreal’s 2018 email server migration project. They also assist with Boreal’s free technology assistance programs with the Cook County Senior Center and the Cook County Schools Community Education tech events at Cook County Schools.
The internship program in 2019 will continue these efforts as well as expand to new locations in other communities in Cook County.
“The board and staff at the Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation are pleased once again to provide grant support to Boreal Community Media for their Intern Technology Program,” said Joan Gardner-Goodno, executive director of the Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation. “The program offers students at Cook County High School the opportunity to engage in real-world work experience while also being able to assist the community at clinics with free technical support. This is a win-win for the students involved and the community, and we are grateful to Boreal for making these types of opportunities available in Cook County,” said Garner-Goodno.
Boreal Community Media provides an array of technology services in Cook County including its community website boreal.org. designed to provide local news, information about community activities and connections to residents and visitors of Cook County and the Arrowhead Region of northern Minnesota through its website: boreal.org. The website also offers a business directory, free classified advertising, and a regional events calendar to keep our communities connected and engaged.
The Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation was created in 1975 at the behest of Lloyd K. Johnson who passed away in 2006 at the age of 97. Mr. Johnson was born in Grand Marais and graduated from Cook County High School in 1925.
The scholarship award helps to fulfill the mission of the Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation to “enhance educational opportunities in Cook County and to significantly improve the quality of life in the North Shore communities of Cook, Lake and southern St. Louis counties through competitive grant making in the areas of Arts and Culture, Community and Economic Development, Education, the Environment and Social Welfare programs to qualified nonprofit organizations.”
