Fisherman’s Picnic presents so many choices to residents and visitors that to hear the Annual Book Sale is a favorite activity is poetry to the ears of dozens of volunteers. From “Will we have enough books?” to “Will we have enough buyers?” many hours are spent to make the sale happen.
Ina Sinkledam is the guide. Through the collecting, hauling, sorting, boxing and storing of books, more than 500 boxes were ready to be delivered for setup at the Cook County Community Center this year. In less than 24 hours, volunteers transformed the arena into a book lover’s haven.
The length of the line of buyers waiting to enter the members-only opening sale is of momentous importance to the workers waiting behind the closed door. Shifts of volunteers taking two-hour sessions covered the threeday event. Other volunteers showed up to disassemble the sale.
Library Friends is a non-profit organization committed to advocacy of all libraries in Cook County. Our volunteers represent a range of local interests. For example, our flyer announcing the sale was distributed in businesses and public places throughout Cook County.
We thank the designer, Joan Ljungkull, for this major contribution to getting buyers to our sale.
The excellent results of our sale this year show the value of working together, keeping our goals in mind and the benefits of a caring community.
Though I cannot thank each of you by name, consider yourself a friend of the library if you gave books, volunteered or bought books. Some did all three!
